New England Radio Discussion Society news

The next meeting of the New England Radio Discussion Society will be held on Tuesday evening, March 18th at 7-PM. We'll meet at The New School on Rt. 1 in Kennebunk.

At that time we'll discuss the ham radio demo for students at The New School. It's slated for April 1st, commencing at noon, with an on-the-air test starting (hopefully) at 12:45-PM.

Of course, at our March 18th meeting we'll have a Tech Tales breeze shooting session, so bring along something for show-and-tell. At the last meeting we were treated to seeing a beautiful General Radio wavemeter and a 16Ø-meter DXCC QSL card collection.

Plans Afoot

At the March 4th meeting, attended by KB1VPD, Tom, K1WHS, Dave, W1BOF, George, K1IEE, Dick and AI2Q, Alex we discussed the upcoming ham radio demo.

Our plan right now is to set up a multi-band HF doublet, fed with open-wire line, in the trees in the school's courtyard. Air-gun maestro KB1MVP, Pete, and air-gun marksman and rope supplier W1BOF will oversee the operation of the pneumatic antenna launcher, and we anticipate lots of hands-on student participation.

Once the antenna is up, we'll operate an Elecraft K3 rig, courtesy of K1WHS. The antenna will be matched with a balanced tuner from W3NA.

We also anticipate making color copies of educational materials sent to us by K1DMJ, Debra, the Education Services Manager at the American Radio Relay League. A table with "Ham Radio in the 21st Century, Reaching for the Stars with Radio," and "22 Things You Can Do With Amateur Radio" will be available. For his part, KB1VPD will hand out a questionnaire students can use to give us feedback.

It was suggested that we also set up a table with examples of ham radio items ranging from QST and CQ magazines to old time and modern radios, keys, microphones, and QSL cards. Let your imagination be your guide, and bring along something from the world of Amateur Radio to put on exhibit.

Marylyn Wentworth, the school's principal, has given us as much time as we like, commencing at 12:45 into the afternoon. Your participation, ideas and suggestions are welcome, so come to the meeting on March 18th to set 'em on the table. Now that the days are brighter and warmer, there's no excuse for staying home. All PCARC members and friends are always welcome. C'mon down!
